Don´t Ban The Can

"Don’t Ban the Can (DBTC) is a non-profit arts and culture movement with an underground urban philosophy, formed as a result of harsh, unjust anti graffiti laws within Victoria, Australia. Jeremy Gaschk together with the We Make Stuff Good collective felt the need for a voice from the streets. Created and run by artists for artists, the movement began with a stand against the new anti graffiti laws introduced into Victoria in June 2008. With a successful initial event in September 2008, the project received support from tens of thousand’s of people from around the globe. DBTC has felt the need to expand into a world wide pro graffiti and street art movement. This has involved tackling issues that inhibit the art form’s culture, ethos and creativity to successfully prosper, evolve and expand.

The Croft Alley Project will bring together an all-star line up of artists from around Australia to create a world-class, large-scale, urban masterpiece. Using graffiti, street, stencil, sticker and paste up artists the project will transform the Croft laneway from a dirty back alley into a creative, colourful and socially innovative thoroughfare visited by tens of thousands of tourists each year.

The DBTC team are very excited to announce this project, believing it will be a very beneficial event to positively enrich Melbourne’s most neglected, persecuted and advantageous art form. This project is one of many initiatives the DBTC team are currently undertaking, including a pioneering month long urban arts and culture festival in January 2010."

The Dos and Dont’s of Colour

"Did you know that colour and visual elements activate the right brain (emotions), while the printed words activate the left brain (logic)? Colour and Typography remain to be the two most important elements in design. When you harmoniously combine them all you attract a quicker attentionx to the subject, reinforce impact and recognition, help in establishing powerful identities and brand, set a mood. Today we’ll examine the DOs and DON’Ts in designing with colour, and next time we’ll investigate the topic of Typography."

More about this huge project curated by Rik Reinking after the Jump

"More than 35 internationally renowned streetartists have been invited to install their work at various locations throughout the city centre and university campus. They are encountering broad support among the city‘s population. Numerous house owners have agreed to their buildings‘ walls being used for graffitis and other artworks. As part of Leuphana’s 2009 Welcome Week, the Urban Art Project will be recorded by 1.200 first-year students who will document the event by shooting videoclips that will be presented through an online media platform. The renowned urban art curator from Hamburg, Rik Reinking, will be leading the creative direction of the event. Expanding the potential spectatorship of this event well beyond the city‘s physical boundaries, public television stations will also document the interaction between artists, students and the population of Lueneburg during this rare presentation of contemporary art within the context of the city‘s medieval centre."

"The artists invited to participate on this project come from a diverse mixture of nationalities and contemporary art backgrounds. They will reshape the appearance of Lueneburg’s historic township using: murals, classic graffiti writing, cut-outs, sculptures, installation art and performance art. The incorporation of this wide selection of urban art forms as well as their unique technical and contextual application in the historical center of Lueneburg have already begun to make it clear that this project will be a landmark event in the development and presentation of contemporary urban art. The artists participating in this event are leaders of their genre, a new generation of emerging creative producers. Their highly refined and precisely contextualized work is an indication of the future aesthetics of contemporary public art. Without loosing their deep connection to urban culture and the public sphere, these artists have already begun to assume representation in leading museums and galleries worldwide. The following artists have been invited to the Leuphana Urban" (Presse Release of the Leuphana University Lueneburg)
